Our Project

For our project, we realized that in France, schools didn't teach the Heimlich Maneuver. After speaking to a doctor, we learned that it was because in France, people should "leave the life-saving to the professionals". We were surprised to learn that as we believed that the Heimlich Maneuver is an important skill to have. We decided that we would have to teach people ourselves.

Step 1: Learning the Heimlich

To start our project, we had to learn how to do the Heimlich Maneuver. We first watched videos, then answered questions, then we finally learned how to do the Heimlich with the help of a Heimlich Heroes doll. It was pretty hard to get used to working with a doll, but we eventually got the hang of it.

The doll was pretty expensive so we had a series of craft sales to fund it. It took  a while to fund as what we sold was a bit pricey to make, but we eventually managed to pay it back. At the sales, we sold rings, bracelets, necklaces, pouches and notecards.

Step 2: Filming the video

To spread awareness, we decided to make a video that explained how to do the Heimlich Maneuver. We spent hours filming and editing the video, it took us an entire afternoon to film. We worked really hard on our video and we were proud to see it finished.

Once it was done, we published it on the USAGSO Paris youtube channel. To watch it, click here.

Step 3: Our Workshops

To conclude our project, we had a series of workshops teaching other kids how to do the Heimlich Maneuver. We had three at Camp-Out and a number of them outside of Girl Scouts.

At our workshops, we showed our video, passed out worksheets for the kids to do and we had them practice on the doll and on each other.

At the end of the workshops, we passed out certificates and pamphlets and we later learned that the children really enjoyed it.

Step 4: Sustainability

A big part of the Silver Award is it has to be sustainable. We managed to make our project sustainable by posting the video we made online, by making pamphlets, by spreading the knowledge through our workshops, by writing articles and by creating this site. Also, we appeared on a radio show called The Message Kids on Ex-Pat radio, and we have contacted some of our City Halls to post our articles in the town newsletters.

When we are done with our project, we will also donate the doll we bought, along with DVDs and materials, to USAGSO Paris so that future troops will be able to learn the Heimlich Maneuver.
